SUMMARY:National Pet Travel Safety Day
DESCRIPTION:National Pet Travel Safety Day\n“Make pet travel safety a priority. \nIn observance of National Pet Travel Safety Day on January 2\, offer your clients a few tips on traveling safely with their pets. \nPlanes\, trains\, or automobiles? \nIn a pet passenger survey conducted by AAA and Kurgo\, 56% of dog owners reported driving with their dog in a vehicle on a monthly basis. Of those respondents\, 29% admitted to being distracted by the actions of uncrated pets. \nThe rules for traveling by car are simple; it is safer for everyone when animals are crated in the back seat of a moving vehicle. Long trips require frequent stops for stretching and bathroom breaks\, and animals should never leave the vehicle without a collar\, ID tag\, and leash. Recommend traveling with another person to help with any pet needs along the way. \nFor clients who plan to travel by air\, there are more details to consider. According to The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)\, traveling by plane can be very risky for a pet. Driving is always a better option\, but when flying is necessary\, suggest the following:” – Click Here to Continue Reading on Henry Schein Animal Health \nResources: \nToday Is National Pet Travel Safety Day – Keep Your Furry Friends Safe On The Road With These Tips – Forbes

SUMMARY:Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day\n“Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day was originally established in 2014 by David Rogers in order to bring awareness to the “interactive role humans play in our pets’ physical birth defects as well as their mental health”. The purpose of this day is to inform about pet birth defects and the importance of prevention\, treatment\, proper care\, and methods of identification. \nPet birth defects can have various causes but some can be avoided through responsible pet ownership. Physical and behavioral problems can be caused by inbreeding and over-breeding pets. Spaying and neutering pets helps to regulate pet overpopulation and to keep the number of pets limited to a reasonable amount\, ensuring that there are enough households who are actually willing to accommodate them. The HSEP alone took in 3088 unwanted pets last year\, while 1034 pets were fostered in the same year. By adopting pets from the shelter the pet overpopulation cycle is weakened\, and the demand for pet breeding is reduced.” – Humane Society of El Paso

SUMMARY:National Dog Holidays in September
DESCRIPTION:Guide/Service Dogs Month \n“September is National Service Dog Month + National Guide Dog Month. FCVC recognizes the hardworking service animals that have many roles in helping humans cope with situations that are not what we would consider “normal”. We bring you this article from Healthy Paws: \nIn some instances\, dogs are not only valuable family members\, but life-saving aides. Working dogs can be found in military and law enforcement agencies worldwide\, but also in hospitals\, schools and citizens’ homes as service and therapy dogs. There are several important differences between service dogs\, therapy dogs\, and emotional support dogs\, but all have important jobs that save lives. \nLet’s take a moment to not only appreciate these very special animals\, but to familiarize yourself with service dog challenges\, etiquette and more.” – Full Circle Veterinary Care \nResources: \nSeptember is National Service Dog Month \n \nNational Pet Insurance Month\n“Responsible pet parents know that pet health insurance is important for their four-legged friends year ‘round. After all\, the love and happiness pets bring us isn’t on a schedule—it’s 24/7! \nBut not everyone has heard about pet insurance and the confidence it brings\, knowing that when the unexpected happens\, you’ll be ready to take action and give your pet the best of care. That’s why September is Pet Health Insurance month. It’s our time to bark\, howl and meow about what we can all do to give something back to the furry friends who give us so much. \nIf your pets are already covered\, we’d like to give you a furry high-five. Now\, go out and spread the word! Don’t have coverage yet? Well\, what are you waiting for?! Explore the Buy Pet Insurance section of our website to learn more. With providers across the US and Canada\, there is sure to be a company that’s just right for you and the ones you love.” – North American Pet Health Insurance Association \n \nAnimal Pain Awareness Month\n“The International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management (IVAPM) educates and informs pet owners about their pet’s health and well-being when it comes to pain management\, be it acute or chronic pain. \nIVAPM has proclaimed September as Animal Pain Awareness Month\, and this coincides with human medicine’s Pain Awareness Month. Animals suffer from pain just like people do. Pain comes in many forms: surgical pain\, arthritis and cancer related pain\, just to name a few.  Acute pain is obvious and distressing. Chronic pain can be subtle\, and masked as “getting old” or “slowing down.”  Old age is not a disease\, but pain is. There are many options to treat the various causes of pain in animals including pain medications\, physical rehabilitation\, acupuncture\, laser therapy\, and therapeutic massage. \nThe proclamation of the month is in keeping with IVAPM’s commitment to encouraging pain management for all animal species through education and advocacy. During this annual campaign\, IVAPM is also encouraging various veterinary organizations to raise public awareness about pain and pain management as it pertains to veterinary patients.” – IVAPM.com

SUMMARY:National Holistic Pet Day
DESCRIPTION:National Holistic Pet Day\n“What does “holistic health” mean? Simply put\, it is a wellness approach that addresses the “whole” animal – body\, mind\, and spirit. Holistic health is all about health and wellness\, not disease. It is a preventative lifestyle that incorporates the WHOLE animal. \nHolistic solutions are gaining more acceptance with pets. It’s been proven that many natural substances\, whether found in the earth or produced by the body\, can give an immune system a well-needed boost. Just as it works for humans\, so it can for pets. \nNational Holistic Pet Day is a chance to help improve your pet’s quality of life by strengthening each of the following: ” – Read More on Dog.com \nResources:  \nNational Holistic Pet Day \nNational Holistic Pet Day

SUMMARY:National Dog Day
DESCRIPTION:National Dog Day\n“We love our dogs and they love us. For that\, we’re eternally grateful. National Dog Day honors this most loyal and adorable creature. After all\, we have a long history together. The dog’s evolution into man’s best friend goes back at least 14\,000 years (and probably longer)\, when they split from wolves to become more lovable\, domesticated animals. Since then\, the bond between people and dogs has transcended time and culture to become an integral part of humanity itself. We would have it no other way. One thing’s for sure — we’re so glad that people and pooches joined forces all those years ago. So on August 26\, gaze upon the cute dog videos flooding social media because it’s time to celebrate man’s best (and oldest) friend!” – National Today \nResources: \nNational Dog Day Facebook Page \n

SUMMARY:National Mutt Day
DESCRIPTION:“National Mutt Day\, also known as National Mixed Breed Dog Day\, was created in 2005 by Celebrity Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate\, Colleen Paige and is celebrated on both July 31st and December 2nd. National Mutt Day is all about embracing\, saving and celebrating mixed breed dogs. The biggest percentage of dogs abandoned and euthanized is due to the constant over-breeding and public desire of designer dogs and pure bred puppies that are sold to pet stores supplied by puppy mills that often produce ill and horribly neglected animals. \nThis special day was created to be celebrated on two dates per year\, to raise awareness of the plight of mixed breed dogs in shelters around the nation\, as approximately 80% of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds. Most pure breeds that end up in the shelter are generally rescued quickly by either the public wanting a “less expensive” pure bred dog or by a pure breed rescue. The day’s mission is to educate the public about the sea of mixed breed dogs that desperately await new homes and to celebrate the amazing characteristics that the mix of breeds creates in each individual dog. \nMixed breed dogs tend to be healthier\, better behaved\, they live longer and are just as able to perform the duties of pure bred dogs – such as bomb and drug sniffing\, search and rescue and guiding the blind. There are millions of loving and healthy mixed breed dogs sitting in shelters\, who are desperately searching for a new home. One of the country’s most famous movie dogs is Benji\, is a mixed breed Terrier. \nSo please visit your local shelter and find a new friend! If you can’t adopt a mixed breed friend on July 31st or December 2nd\, please donate at least $5 to your local animal shelter\, as they all need financial assistance and every dollar counts! You can also volunteer to walk a dog\, donate food and other supplies needed to your local animal rescue. \nPLEASE help end the overpopulation of dogs by spaying and neutering your pets.” – Read more at NationalMuttDay.com \n\nResources: \nNational Mutt Day – July 31 and December 2

SUMMARY:National Pet Fire Safety Day
DESCRIPTION:National Pet Fire Safety Day\nJuly 15 is recognized as National Pet Fire Safety day in the United States. It is a day set aside to raise awareness about house fires and educate homeowners on keeping their pets safe. The American Kennel Club and ADT Security designated this day in 2008 and both hold special events and publish materials designed to help pet owners. \nAccording to National Fire Protection Association over 500\,000 pets are affected by house fires each year. And more concerning\, over 1\,000 fires are actually started by pets! \nAs a pet owner\, one of your responsibilities is to safeguard not only your pet but also your home in order to keep them safe and secure. You never know when a fire may start\, you may be home and able to get yourself and your pet out of the house quickly\, but you may not be home and you need to ensure you have measures in place to protect and safeguard your pets. You must plan for unanticipated emergencies. – Petnet.io \nResources: \nPet Fire Safety | Protecting Your Pets from Potential Danger by Red Cross

SUMMARY:No Pet Store Puppies Day
DESCRIPTION:No Pet Store Puppies Day\n“On Tuesday\, July 21\, the ASPCA will be celebrating national No Pet Store Puppies Day\, and we’re asking for your help! This is a great chance to educate your friends and family about what happens in puppy mills and remind them not to buy puppies\, or any pet supplies\, from pet stores that sell puppies—and adopt from a shelter or rescue group instead! \nPuppy mill cruelty is a national problem. Tens of thousands of breeding dogs spend their lives in puppy mills\, large-scale commercial breeding operations where profit is given priority over the well-being of the dogs. Dogs in these facilities are typically housed in tiny\, overcrowded cages in unsanitary conditions\, without proper veterinary care of adequate access to food and water—and many live out their entire lives without ever experiencing human affection. Female breeding dogs are bred at every opportunity with little to no time between litters for their bodies to recover\, in order to produce as many puppies as possible and generate more profit for the mills. \nWhat’s more\, their offspring may suffer from behavior\, congenital and hereditary problems as a result of irresponsible breeding practices. Puppies are typically sold to pet shops as young as eight weeks of age. Since most pet store puppies come from puppy mills\, this cruelty is perpetuated every time a puppy is purchased from a pet store. \nThe ASPCA estimates that there are between 6\,000 and 10\,000 commercial breeding facilities in the United States—and we refuse to rest until every single mill dog is safe.” – ASPCA \nResources:  \nThree Ways to Get Involved During No Pet Store Puppies Day \n
